3 Reasons Panzura Was Named a Top 5 NAS Consolidation Solution

October 7, 2021 | All

After evaluating twenty cloud-based network-attached storage (NAS) solutions, DCIG, Inc. has issued its 2021 report on optimal solutions for NAS consolidation, and Panzura CloudFS emerged as one of the top five.

Cloud-based NAS is high-capacity, file-level data storage in the cloud that provides access to multiple users on multiple computers. The DCIG evaluation considered deployment capabilities, data protection, product and performance management, documentation, licensing and pricing, and technical support. The other four solutions that DCIG named in the “Top 5” report were CTERA Enterprise File Services Platform, IBM Spectrum Scale, Nasuni, and Wekal0 WekaFS.

Although there are similarities among the five, the differences are where Panzura generates interest.

In addition to having wide public support, data-in-flight encryption, good integration with existing data storage infrastructure, non-disruptive data migrations, and SMB and NFS protocol support, the DCIG report described additional features that earned Panzura the Top 5 award:

  1. Ransomware mitigation.  Instead of modifying cloud-stored data,Panzura CloudFS stores new or changed data as additional objects, which are protected by read-only snapshots taken at configurable intervals. If ransomware infiltrates past a company’s first line of defense, CloudFS uses the snapshots to revert files back to the time before the attack
  2. Storage analytics.  Panzura Data Services provide a dashboard that allows administrators to search, monitor, audit, and analyze the company’s entire file network. Any file or file event can be searched, with results quickly displayed. Metrics can be changed as needed to support key performance indicators. The analytics dashboard enables Panzura users to optimize performance and forecast capacity through the use of historical, current and forward-looking analyses.
  3. Global deduplication and compression.  Panzura optimizes storage capacity by running inline block-level deduplication and compression on stored data on the network. This removes blocks that are common across different files. Deduplicating at the block level (128KB) instead of the chunk level (4MB) enables greater efficiency. By leveraging the cloud as a distribution point, Panzura embeds the deduplication reference table in metadata, which is then shared among all Panzura appliances. Thus, data redundancy is reduced globally across all controllers rather than just one. The Panzura deduplication features enable companies to reduce their total storage footprint and file transfer times.

Challenges facing companies include larger file sizes, remote office access to data, complicated and expensive storage infrastructure, and increasing pressure on data centers. The DCIG report explains, “Many enterprises struggle with managing expanding volumes of unstructured data throughout the organization. Storing, protecting, and securing this data creates challenges around cost, complexity, and scalability.”

The DCIG study was conducted to determine which cloud-based NAS solutions address these issues and offer innovative ways for companies to increase efficiency and profit.
