As discussed in detail in our BIM 360 Build RFI blog, RFIs are crucial to a project, and they can impact the cost of a project as well as the schedule. This is one of the biggest responsibilities of the project management team because completing a job on time and within budget is their primary responsibility. BIM 360 Build offers one cloud-based solution for RFIs, but there is another Autodesk cloud-based solution that saves teams time on RFIs: PlanGrid.

PlanGrid has two different RFI modules, Classic and Advanced RFIs. The classic version for RFIs comes with PlanGrid right out of the box and is great for keeping track of all RFIs and reporting. The Advanced RFIs portion of PlanGrid comes with the Workflows Bundle and is great for streamlining the entire RFI process. With Advanced RFIs, an RFI can either be generated directly from the field by your superintendent or at your desktop computer when your detailer sends you a markup for something the engineer needs to look at. From there the question can be reviewed by your assigned RFI manager to decide whether or not the question is valid and worth sending to the reviewers.

If the RFI is valid and needs to be sent, the RFI manager can edit the question and add any additional attachments that might be required before sending to the reviewer. One of the differentiators for PlanGrid is the fact that when a reviewer gets assigned an RFI to answer, they do not have to have a PlanGrid license to answer that RFI. The reviewer can simply reply to the automatic email they receive from PlanGrid with their answer and any attachments. From there the RFI manager can see that answer within PlanGrid and distribute the RFI to the team with directions on how to proceed.

The workflow video for PlanGrid advanced RFIs is the same scenario covered in the BIM 360 Build RFI video. Every construction company is unique, and thus the workflows are unique, which is why Autodesk provides multiple solutions for RFIs. Compare this video to our BIM 360 Build RFI video.

This is the third of a four-part workflow blog series. Check out our BIM 360 Build RFI and Submittal videos if you have not seen them yet. Next week we will complete our workflows blog series by going through the PlanGrid Submittals module.
