PlanGrid Submittals Workflow
Part of Series: RFI and Submittals Workflows
As mentioned in the BIM 360 Build Submittal blog, the AEC industry is undergoing a transformation due to emerging technologies. For a long while tech for managing submittals did not exist. Submittals are a big part of the project management team’s responsibilities, because they help ensure that all equipment procured for a project is exactly what the architect, engineer and owner agreed upon based on price, performance and aesthetic. BIM 360 Build offers a cloud-based solution for RFIs, but there is another Autodesk solution that saves the whole team time on submittals: PlanGrid.
The PlanGrid submittals module is a part of the Workflows Bundle add-on. With PlanGrid submittals, the entire process from creation through approval is streamlined. The PlanGrid submittals module sets itself apart because of a visual workflow that lets you know exactly where the submittal stands in the process. Rather than having to go back and forth through emails, you can see exactly where the submittal is in the process and who is holding up the show. When the submittal manager creates and assigns a submittal to someone, that person will receive an automatic email prompting them to attach their submittal documents, such as product data or IFA (issued for approval) drawings. Once that is done, it goes back up the chain to the submittal manager to review and make sure the submittal is accurate enough to be sent up the chain to the reviewers (the submittal manager can assign as many reviewers as are necessary). One of the things that sets PlanGrid submittals apart is the fact that the reviewers do not have to have a license of PlanGrid to view and respond to submittal documents. They just click the link on the email that PlanGrid automatically sent. This gives them a copy of the submittal, a dropdown menu of responses and an option to upload a copy of the submittal with their markups. Once the submittal has gone through the review process it can go back to the submittal manager, and from there it can be distributed to the project team with notes on how to proceed.
The workflow video for the PlanGrid submittals module is the same scenario covered in the BIM 360 Build Submittals video. Since every construction company does things differently, and people have different preferences on workflows, Autodesk provides multiple solutions for submittals. This is the final installment of our four-part workflows blog series. We thank you for watching and hope these videos bring you closer to a solution for RFI and submittal woes.
